What the FPS and draw-weight numbers on a spec sheet actually mean for your hunt.
FPS (feet per second) and draw weight are the two numbers every crossbow spec sheet leads with — and the two numbers most first-time buyers misread. More of either isn't automatically better; what matters is whether the number fits the game you're hunting and the shots you'll actually take.

Turkeys are small, close-range targets. Nearly any modern crossbow, including the 300 FPS Ballista BAT, has plenty of speed and energy for an ethical shot.
This is where most hunters land. The Barnett Whitetail Hunter II (350 FPS) and Ravin R10X Pro (400 FPS) both cover this range comfortably.
Elk carry more mass and thicker hide, so more downrange energy genuinely matters. Bows like the Ravin R29X (450 FPS) and Ravin R500E (500 FPS) build in extra margin.
Flatter trajectory reduces the margin for a ranging mistake at distance. The CenterPoint Wrath 430X (430 FPS) and the Ravin R-series bows are built for this.
Unlike a vertical bow, a crossbow's draw weight only matters at the moment you cock it. Once it's cocked, the trigger holds all that stored energy — you feel none of it while aiming or holding on target.
The CenterPoint Wrath 430X uses 185 lbs of draw weight to reach 430 FPS. But draw weight alone doesn't tell the whole story — the Ravin R500E hits 500 FPS with only 100 lbs of draw weight, using cam design instead of brute force.
A 185 lb bow with a built-in crank can be easier to cock than a 100 lb bow with only a rope aid. If upper-body strength or repeated cocking is a concern, prioritize bows with integrated crank systems over chasing a lower draw-weight number.
320–400 FPS covers nearly every realistic shot. Spending more to get a faster bow rarely changes the outcome at typical ranges.
400+ FPS builds in real margin for bigger game and longer, less predictable shot distances.
You never hold draw weight at full draw. Focus on the cocking system — crank vs. rope — more than the raw number.
320–400 FPS covers the vast majority of deer hunting situations at typical 20–50 yard ranges. Most modern crossbows in the $300–$500 range already hit this window, so FPS rarely needs to be the deciding factor for deer hunters.
More speed helps, but it's really about downrange energy — elk carry significantly more mass than deer. Crossbows in the 400+ FPS range give more margin for a clean, ethical shot on elk-sized game.
Not necessarily. Higher draw weight often means more speed, but cam design can produce high FPS with lower draw weight too — the Ravin R500E hits 500 FPS at only 100 lbs of draw weight. Cocking system and ease of use matter as much as the raw number.
With a rope cocking aid (included with most crossbows) or, on premium models, a built-in crank or silent cocking system. If draw weight is a concern, prioritize bows with integrated crank systems over lower-draw-weight bows that only include a rope aid.
